Reza Bashar, owner and principal engineer of MEPSCo GAMP
Owner and Principal Engineer · MEPSCo

Reza Bashar

Reza Bashar is a fractional automation engineer for medical device manufacturers. He manages the full equipment procurement lifecycle — from the first customer interview through IQ/OQ/PQ and knowledge transfer to the internal team — on a project basis, without the overhead of a full-time hire.

A GAMP documentation process built from scratch at Gen-Probe starting in 2001, tested on every project since, and refined into 22 proprietary document types covering every step from URS through release to manufacturer.

Some people in the industry call this role a GAMP consultant. Reza’s title is fractional automation engineer, and the two terms point to the same work: equipment procurement, GAMP documentation, and validation support, managed by one senior engineer instead of a full-time hire.

The fractional model isn’t a workaround. It’s the right structure for a project that needs senior-level automation engineering experience for a defined period of time, then doesn’t. Reza does the work, trains the junior engineer, transfers the documentation and SOPs, and moves on. That’s the design.

Experience and Education

The GAMP process didn’t come from a training course or a framework borrowed from another industry. It came from being handed a machine at Gen-Probe in 2001 and asked to perform a Factory Acceptance Test with no documentation, no URS, no specs. The question “to what document?” started everything. 25+ years and 96+ projects later, that process is 22 document types covering every step of equipment procurement from CRD through release to manufacturer.

Memberships: SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers), PDA (Parenteral Drug Association), ISPE (International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering), ASME (mentor role), Device Alliance, French BioBeach, SDEE (San Diego Entrepreneurs Exchange), BSA (17 years).

Speaking: “Determining Semi vs. Full Automation Needs,” Lunch & Learn with Square-1 MedTech Consulting, January 2026. MD&M West 2026 attendee.

2021 — 2024

Principal Global Technical Solutions Engineer

Hologic Inc.

Traveled to Hologic manufacturing facilities worldwide to standardize automation procurement processes and resolve manufacturing engineering challenges across sites. Managed vendor relationships across 15+ automation companies. Led the Helsinki project. Applied the GAMP documentation process built at Gen-Probe to global manufacturing operations.

2012 — 2021

Sr. Manufacturing Engineer

Hologic Inc. (Acquired Gen-Probe)

Managed equipment procurement and validation for Hologic following the Gen-Probe acquisition. Continued developing and applying the proprietary GAMP documentation process across new product lines and manufacturing scale-ups. Founded MEPSCo in 2018 while still employed at Hologic, after identifying the gap in the market.

During COVID-19, managed $150M in equipment orders and validation activities for a DOD pandemic contract — multiple 200 PPM filling lines qualified in the US and UK, on time, with no change orders, and a reduced engineering team.

2001 — 2012

Sr. Manufacturing Engineer

Gen-Probe Inc.

Started as a manufacturing engineer in sustaining engineering. Promoted to Project Engineer. In 2001, asked to perform a Factory Acceptance Test on filling equipment that had been ordered without a URS or any supporting documentation. That project exposed every gap in the industry’s approach to GAMP compliance and set the foundation for what became MEPSCo’s proprietary process.

Created the entire manufacturing equipment procurement documentation process from scratch: mapped the FAT from first principles, developed a roadmap covering every phase of equipment procurement, and built 22 document types describing each step of the process. Tested and refined across every subsequent project at Gen-Probe — close to 100 projects over 11 years.

Developed novel solutions that resulted in multiple patents, including the MilliSnap device (from prototype to final product).

1997 — 2001

Special Effects Designer

Walt Disney Imagineering

Designed, fabricated, and installed special effects at Walt Disney World and Disney California Adventure. Projects included the Coca-Cola “Cool Zones” at Walt Disney World, Grizzly Rapids, Bear Mountain waterfalls, and the Farm water park area at Disney California Adventure.

The Disney years established the design philosophy that runs through every MEPSCo project: build for the person who has to run it every day. If the system isn’t easily maintainable — including the documentation — it won’t be maintained. A half-inch stainless steel shaft broken by park guests was the lesson that changed how every design since has been spec’d for real-world conditions.

1992 — Present

Artist and Owner

Creative Water Sights

Design, build, install, and maintain water sculptures. Started with copper sheetmetal kinetic wall units and grew into a full sales, design, and build business. The fluid dynamics knowledge from this work — how water moves, behaves under pressure, manages flow — applied directly to medical device manufacturing process development. The mag-particle suspension fill process at Hologic drew from this background.

1981 — 1985

Bachelor of Science, Mechanical Engineering

University of Arizona

Presented research at the Gas Combustion Institute symposium in Boulder, CO at age 19, on behalf of the University of Arizona Separation Sciences Lab. Audience of 50+ PhDs.
